Finally got to play with a Wii U last night. The little Ian within who used to be dedicated to Nintendo was very happy.
Had a play with the interface and spent a lot of time on the GamePad. It really lends itself to innovation, which is what Nintendo have always tried to do with controller input. Even messing around with my Mii was just fun, despite the entire look receiving what appeared to be few changes since the Wii.
Had a crack at Zombii U which feels like a great showcase of what can be done with the console when just a little thought is put in. Especially enjoyed the scanning feature, lifting the pad up and turning around the room. A very immersive experience. Also nice visuals.
Moved on to New Super Mario Brothers. What can I say but woweee?! Had a four player bout through the first world, lots of laughs and head jumping. We took turns placing blocks around using the GamePad. It was just good old fun, but with a Nintendo twist. They have not lost their charm.
Then NintendoLand. The games here were also great, though certainly feeling like the showcase for the console. Had a go at the Animal Crossing, Mario and Luigi’s Mansion games. I was hooked on the latter, constantly trying to catch the guys out posing as a ghost!
The entire experience really drew me back to an evening years ago where a group of us got together and played four swords on the GameCube with four GameBoy Advances hooked up. Nintendo to the core, coming up with great new ways of bringing people together to play games.
The experience for me was solid. I don’t get why Nintendo have promoted the console so badly, it could sell really well with some killer apps. Sadly NintendoLand is not a killer app and I did notice some shifty loading times. Otherwise it was Nintendo at its usual best, charming, surprising and fun.
